About Twelve Bens/Garraun Complex Special Area of Conservation

The Twelve Bens/Garraun Complex Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is located in the Connemara region of County Galway on Ireland’s west coast. The site encompasses a dramatic series of granite peaks collectively known as the Twelve Bens, along with the Garraun massif, covering a varied terrain of mountain summits, heathlands, blanket bogs, lakes, and river systems. This ecologically important area hosts a diversity of habitats, including montane heaths, oligotrophic lakes, and active blanket bogs, all of which support a range of rare and protected flora and fauna, such as the slender naiad, otters, and various bird species like the peregrine falcon and red grouse. The Twelve Bens are famed for their scenic beauty and challenging outdoor recreation opportunities, attracting hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts. Trails range from moderate mountain walks to strenuous ridge climbs with spectacular panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding Connemara landscape. The area also holds archaeological and cultural significance with remnants of ancient settlements and traditional Irish upland farming practices. Nearby the village of Leenane serves as a gateway to the mountains and provides visitor amenities. Central landmarks include peaks such as Benbaun, the highest in the range at 729 meters, and Garraun, known for its quartzite topography. Visitors are drawn by the combination of wild terrain, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage, making it a top destination for experiencing Ireland's rugged western wilderness.
